So what's the big deal about making soda at home? Is it really a better option than just buying it at the grocery store? Well...since current SodaStream users are making over a half -BILLION liters of soda at home each year...there must be something to it!
Let's face it, Americans love soda. In fact, the average American consumes over 159 liters...about 450 cans... of carbonated drinks EACH YEAR! I hope that me and my family of four aren't drinking THAT much soda but still, I plop down my cash and schlep home at least 4-5 12-packs of canned soda...every week. Why? Because we all like soda but we all like different flavors!
I first heard about SodaStream while attending a boat show about 8 years ago and I was so impressed that I purchased it. I was thrilled to have 4 small flavoring bottles in my cabinet rather than 132 cans! I was even more thrilled not to have to lug all those cans off the grocery shelves into my cart, off the cart and into my car and then out of my car into my fridge...which I would have to rearrange every time to accomodate the 132 cans! Whew...I loved the convenience of the SodaStream! but...
I only used it for a couple of years and then stashed it away. Why? Because, 8 years ago, there weren't many flavors and it was a hassel getting a new CO2 cartridge. Now, they have over 50 flavors and 50,000 retailers in 42 counties where you can not only buy flavors but you can swap out your empty tank for a full one; like you do with the propane tank on your grill only it's MUCH lighter and smaller!
That's how the SodaStream works incidentally. It does not use electricity; it has a CO2 cartridge in the back to convert flat water to fizzy water! Depending on the kit that you buy, they give you 1-4 really nice 1-litre bottles (reusable for up to 3 years) which you fill with plain 'ole tap water and then screw onto the SodaStream. You then press down on a button on the top to initiate the CO2 that generates the fizzy bubbles. Then remove the bottle, pour in a little flavor syrup and voila...soda! OR...don't add syrup and you have sparkling water to add to OJ, cranberry juice, wine and other adult beverages. Oh no...the SodaStream is not a kiddie appliance!
But here's the thing ...soda is soda and it's not good for you. SodaStream will be the first to tell you that soda will never be as healthy as water...no way. But, they do not use high fructose corn syrup in any flavor, ever, and their diet drinks never use aspartame. So as far as soda goes...it's better.
But what about the taste? Do the SodaStream flavors taste exactly like the big brand names? No; some aren't quite as good but some are better. What I do really like about the flavors is they are completely customizable. I can regulate the amount of carbonation and the strength of the flavor so it's exactly how I like it AND I can mix flavors. Add a little Orange to my Lemon-Lime or a little Raspberry to my Ginger Ale...it's pretty much limitless.
Plus, for a lighter flavor and the more health conscious consumer, they offer all-natural, unsweetened flavor essence to transform plain sparkling water into flavored sparkling water like raspberry, orange and lemon-lime; which I like very much because it helps me drink more water...and less soda! I also hear that Country Time Lemonade and Crystal Light are joining the flavor line up...yum!
Beyond the huge variety of flavors and the ease of cartridge replacement, there are several other reasons why the SodaStream is better than ever and now lives full time on my counter...number 1 being the environment. My neighborhood does not facilitate recycling and I am too lazy to wash cans, bag cans and drive them the 15 miles to the recycling place. Since I stopped using the Soda Steam 6 years ago, to my calculations, my family has used 14,976 cans...wow...I'm a little ashamed of myself right now. The sad thing is that if I didn't convert back to the Soda
Stream, I would continue to hurt the planet because I know myself and I would not wash, pack and drive cans. How about you?
The more I learn about the Soda Stream, the more I like it. For soda lovers like me, it's the perfect way to have my soda...easily, conveniently, deliciously and much more earth friendly!
BTW...the folks at SodaStream do not promote the use of alcoholic beverages. So when I say it makes amazing Sangria and Spritzers...that's just me talking 🙂
