Did you know...Americans eat 7 billion hot dogs...every year... between Memorial Day to Labor Day?! That's 818 hot dogs per second.
Do the math...nearly 6,000 were consumed in the time it's taken you to read this far!
Yep...Hot Dogs are everywhere and topped every which way! Here's a list of America's most popular dogs:
It is reported that New Yorkers eat more hot dogs than any other group in the country. In downtown Manhattan a standard dog comes served with steamed (or fried) onions and a pale, deli-style yellow mustard but if you are out in Coney Island...expect bean-less Chili added on top.
Chicago's O'Hare International Airport consumes SIX times more hot dogs, 725,000 more than Los Angeles International Airport and LaGuardia Airport combined! Chicago dogs are layered with yellow mustard, dark green relish, chopped raw onion, tomato slices and topped with a dash of celery salt and served in a poppy seed bun. Most places also add a couple of hot peppers and a thin slice of dill pickle.
In Atlanta and the south, you'll end up with your dog "dragged through the garden" and topped with coleslaw. Some Southern's (like me) also add mustard and chopped onion to that Slaw-Dog!
A hot dog in Kansas City is commonly served with sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese on a sesame seed bun. Traditionally...KC dogs are pork. If your are in West Virginia add chili first and then top with slaw.
The Boston-Fenway Frank - served at none other than Fenway Park - is the only dog to eat while watching the Red Sox. Its boiled and grilled and served in a New England style bun with mustard, ketchup, onions and relish.
If you like jalapeños, head to Texas, for their chili, cheese and jalapeño dog or try a Seattle dog topped with cream cheese, fried onions and srircha sauce along with your jalapeños!
But what about the dog itself? If you like Beef...head East! They prefer all-beef hotdogs and consume more than any other region. For Pork...try the Midwest. And if Poultry is your thing...naturally the WestCoast is the winner in that category. The South is catching up though, coming in at a close second on Poultry dogs.
How to Cook the perfect dog? Except for the NY carts serving Dirty Water Dogs...my favorite method is Steaming! Even if you grill or fry, it is common all over America to steam first. And the buns? You gotta steam them for that hot, soft, deliciousness! But how? And for how long? That has been a problem for me for a long time. Not so much the dogs, but getting the exact right texture and taste from the buns. Not any more!
If you love savory hot dogs on steamy buns...and want to cook 12 dogs and 12 buns...perfectly...in 12 minutes...the answer is Cuizen's HotDog Steamer. It's like having a hotdog cart in your home...only easier to clean!
July 24th, 2012 HSN will be hosting another Chef Event. And, even though Todd English, Emeril and Cat Cora will all be in the house cooking fantastic dishes that make your mouth water, I urge you to...
tune in at 7am and watch Marc Gill make Hot Dogs from Around the World in the Cuizen Hot Dog Steamer. I know, who wants a hot dog at 7am? After seeing all these dogs...you just might!
The recipes are straight from the included booklet and let me tell you they are GOOD! I have personally tried several and it's really fun tasting the different flavors that I usually on get while traveling. I love the steamer, love the recipes and, even though I do like a good slaw-dog...LOVE the Chicago Dogs!
What's your favorite Dog? I'll ask Marc to make it for you live on TV!
